Terms of Movement and Relationships/Comparison Flashcards
Defining the types of movement
Which movement indicates decreasing the angle between the parts of the body?
Flexion
What movement type does extension indicate?
strengthening/increasing the angle between parts
What is Dorsiflexion?
Flexion at the ankle w/ foot pointed up
What is plantarflexion?
Flexion at the ankle w/ foot pointed down
What type of movement can cause injury?
Hyperextension
What movement term indicates moving away from the midline?
Abduction
What movement term indicates moving towards the midline?
Adduction
What term indicated abduction specifically for the neck?
Lateral Flexion
What is circumduction?
Moving in a circular motion
What type of rotation means turning a body part towards the midline?
Medial (Internal) Rotation
Which type of rotation means turning a body part away from the midline?
Lateral (External) Rotation
Pronation indicates the body part is facing what direction?
Down (radius rotates medially so palm faces Posteriorly
What is the opposite of pronation?
Supination (indicating the body part [wrist] is facing up)
What movement term indicates moving the sole of the foot away from the median plane?
Eversion
What is the opposite of Eversion?
Inversion (indicating the sole moves toward the median plane)
What movement does the term Opposition suggest?
Bringing together the pad of the 1st digit (thumb) to another digit pad.
What term means the opposite of opposition?
Reposition
What movement term indicates moving a part anteriorly (forward) such as the jaw?
Protrusion
What is the opposite of protrusion?
Retrusion
What term means protrusion of the scapula?
Protraction
What term means retrusion of the scapula?
Retraction
What movement does elevation indicate?
Raising a body part superiorly (shrugging)
What movement does depression indicate?
Lowering a body part inferiorly (standing at ease)
What relationship term indicates nearer to the vertex?
Superior
What does the term inferior suggest?
Closer to the sole of foot
What type of relation does the term cranial suggest?
Toward the cranium/brain
What does the term caudal suggest?
Toward the feet/tail bone
What relationship term indicates nearer to back?
Posterior
What is the opposite of posterior?
Anterior - indicating towards the front
What does the term rostral indicate?
toward the anterior head
What term defines the relationship farther from the midline?
Lateral
What does the term medial mean?
Nearest to the median of the body
What term defines the posterior surfaces?
Dorsal
In what order would you place the three terms indicating its relation to the surface of the body?
Superficial -> Intermediate -> Deep
What term indicates it is positioned further outside of an organ/cavity?
External
What term indicates it is positioned inside/closer to an organ/cavity?
Internal
What does the term Proximal indicate?
Towards the attachment of a limb
What is the opposite of proximal?
Distal - indicates away from attachment of limb (toward digits)
What motion brings anterior surfaces of adjacent segments together (decreases angle)?
Flexion
What motion brings posterior surfaces of adjacent segments together (increases angle)?
Extension
What motion brings segments away from the midline?
Abduction
What motion brings segments towards the midline?
Adduction
What motion moves a segment parallel to the ground towards the midline?
Internal Rotation
What motion moves a segment parallel to the ground away from the midline?
External Rotation
In what plane does flexion/extension occur in?
Sagittal
In what plane does abduction/adduction occur?
Frontal
In what plane does ER/IR occur?
Transverse
What is the surface of the hand in relation to the palm?
Palmar Surface
What is the surface of the foot in relation to the sole?
Plantar Surface
