Body Tissues Flashcards
distinguish between the tissue types/function
What are the four tissue types?
- Epithelial 2. Connective 3. Muscle 4. Nerve
What are the [four] major functions of epithelial tissue?
Protection, Absorption, Sensation, and Secretion
Where can you find epithelial tissue?
Lining of Body Cavities, surfaces of BVs, glands
What type of epithelial tissue is one layer?
Simple
What type of epithelial tissue is multiple layers?
Stratified
What type of epithelial tissue is wider than it is tall?
Squamous
What type of epithelial tissue is equal in height and width?
Cuboidal
What type of epithelial tissue is taller than it is wide?
Columnar
Where in the body can you find squamous epithelial tissue?
Lungs and BVs
Where in the body is cuboidal epithelial tissue?
Glands
Where in the body can you find columnar epithelial tissue?
Digestive tract and trachea
By what process can epithelial tissue receive nutrients?
Diffusion
What are the functions of connective tissue?
Protection and support
Where can connective tissue be found?
Everywhere in the body between other tissues
What are the three components of connective tissue?
Fibers, Ground Substance, and Cells (fibroblasts)
What are the two types of fibers found in connective tissue?
Collagenous and Elastic
What are the six types of connective tissue?
- Bone 2. Fibrous (large amounts of collagen) 3. Loose 4. Blood plasma 5. Adipose 6. Cartilage
Where in the body can you find loose connective tissue?
Around BVs and organs
Where in the body can you find fibrous connective tissue?
Tendons/Ligaments
Where in the body can you find cartilage?
End of bones, nose, and ears
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
- Skeletal 2. Cardiac 3. Smooth
What type of muscle tissue is not stratified?
Smooth
What is the function of smooth muscle?
Movement of Blood/Substances
Where in the body can you find smooth muscle?
GI tract, arteries, and veins
What type of muscle tissue is associated with the heart?
Cardiac
What is the special characteristic that muscle tissue has?
Contraction
What are the [five] functions of nerve tissue?
Sensory input, integration, control of muscles/glands, homeostasis and mental activity
Nerve tissue are made up of what?
Neurons and glial cells
What are the three parts that make up a neuron?
- Cell body 2. Dendrite 3. axon
What is the function of the dendrite?
Receive electrical impulses
What is the function of the axon?
Receive impulse from dendrite and communicate with axon terminal to cell
