Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the two “sub”systems that make up the Circulatory System?
Cardiovascular System and Lymphatic System
What two components make up the CVS?
Heart and BVs
What are the two circuits of the heart?
Pulmonary and Systemic
Which circuit pumps deoxygenated blood out of the heart to the lungs?
Pulmonary
Which circuit pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart?
Systemic
What structure receives blood from the arms and head/neck?
Superior Vena Cava
What structure receives blood from the legs and the belly?
Inferior Vena Cava
What structure pumps blood back to body from the heart?
Aorta
How does blood get from the right atrium to the right ventricle?
Via Tricuspid valve
How does blood get from the right ventricle to the lungs?
Pulmonary valve
Blood goes from the right ventricle to the lungs via what structure(s)?
Right and Left Pulmonary Arteries
When CO2/O2 Exchange occurs in the lungs, this deoxygenated blood is then pumped back to the heart via what structure(s)?
Right and Left Pulmonary veins
To what chamber of the heart do the pulmonary veins dump into?
Left Atrium
Blood pumps from the left atrium to the left ventricle via what structure?
Mitral valve
For blood to pump from the left ventricle to aorta, what structure must it pass through?
Aortic valve
What structure of the heart pumps blood from the heart to the body?
Aorta
What structure pumps blood away from the heart?
Arteries
What structure pumps blood towards the heart?
Veins
Indicate the pathway of the blood from the heart back to the heart.
Oxygenated blood out via arteries -> arterioles -> capillaries -> capillary bed -> venules -> small veins -> large veins (SVC/IVC) deoxygenated blood -> heart
What are the three layers of BVs in order of inner to outer lining?
- Tunica intima (endothelium) 2. tunica media (Smooth muscle) 3. tonica adventitia (connective tissue layer/sheath)
What are some variations of the CVS that can occur?
Arteriosclerosis, MI, stroke, Ischemia, varicose veins
What is the lymphatic system?
Provides the drainage of surplus tissue fluid and leaked plasma proteins to the bloodstream and removal of debris from cellular decomposition and infection
What is the watery fluid that goes through the LS?
Lymph
What is the flow through the LS, essentially?
Blood capillaries -> ISF -> lymph capillaries -> Lymphatic vessels -> lymph nodes -> lymph trunks -> Lymphatic Ducts -> Jugular/Subclavian Junction
What part of the body does the Right Lymphatic Duct filter?
upper right quadrant (R side of head, neck and thorax)
What part of the body does the Left Lymphatic Duct filter?
the remainder of the body
What organs are associated with the lymphatic system?
Thymus, Spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes
