Integumentary System Flashcards
What are the five functions of the integumentary system?
- protection from Int/Ext Environment 2. Containment of structures and substances 3. thermal regulation (sweat) 4. Sensation 5. Synthesis and storage of Vit D
What are the primary components of the integumentary system?
Hair, Skin, and Nails
What is the outermost layer of the skin?
Epidermis
What is the epidermis made of?
Keratinized epithelium
What are the two layers of the epidermis?
- basal layer 2. horny, superficial layer
What is the second outermost layer of the skin?
Dermis
What is the role of the dermis?
Account for the strength/Toughness of the skin
What layer of the skin is responsible for the pigmentation?
Dermis
What structures are located in the dermis?
Hair follicles, arrector muscles, sebaceous glands
What is the next inner layer of skin after the dermis?
Superficial Fascia (Subcutaneous tissue) [Hypodermis]
What type of tissue is the fascia made up of?
Connective tissue - adipose mainly but some loose
What structures are located in the the hypodermis?
Sweat glands, superificial BVs, Lymphatic vessels, and cutaneous nerves
What special function does the hypodermis do?
Thermoregulation
What special feature does the hypodermis contain that determines mobility?
Skin ligaments
What is the innermost layer of skin?
Deep fascia
