temporal and infratemporal regions and muscles of mastication Flashcards
muscles of mastication are derived
mesoderm of first brachial arch
4 roots of otic ganglion
sympathetic, sensory, motor, secretomotor
blood supply of infratemporal region
maxillary artery
boundaries of temporal fossa
sup: superior temporal lines
inf: zygomatic arch
anteri: frontal and zygomatic bone
posteri: inferior temporal line and supra mastoid crest
contents of temporal fossa
temporalis
middle temporal artery
greater temporal nerve supplying temporalis
zygomatioctemporal nerves and vessels
greater temporal artery which is branch of maxillary artery
boundaries of infratemporal fossa
rood: infratemporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid
anteriorly: pst surface of body of maxilla
medial: lateral pterygoid plate and pyramidal process of palatine bone
laterally: ramus of mandible
contents of infratemporal fossa
- medial pterygoid plate
- lateral pterygoid plate
- manidbular nerve with its branches
- maxilllary nerve with its posterior superior alveolar branches
- 1 and 2 parts of maxillary artery with its branches
- chorda tympani which is a branch of facial nerve
- posterior superior alveolar artery which is a branch of 3rd part of maxillary artery
- accompanying veins
bones of pterion
frontal, parietal, temporal and greater wing of sphenoid.
masseter muscle origin:
1.. superficial layer: anterior 2/3rd of the lower border of zygomatic arch
deep layer: deep surface of zyogomatic arch
3. middle layer: posterior 1/3rd of the lower border of zygomatic arch
masseter muscle insertion:
superficial layer: lateral surface lower borrder of the ramus of the mandible
deep layer: rest of the ramus of the mandible
middle layer: central part of the ramus of mandible
nerve supply of masseter muscle and its functioon
masseteric nerve whicb is a branch of anterior division of mandibular nerve
- superficila layers cause protrusion
generally elevates the mandible
temporalis muscle origin and insertion
origin: a. temporal fossa
b. temporal fascia
insertion: a. margin and deep surface of coronoid process
b. anterior surface of the ramus of mandible
temporalis muscle nerve and functin
two deep temporal nerves braches of anterior division of mandibular nerve
elevates, side to side grinding
and posterior fibers (horizontal) cause protrusion
lateral pterygoid origin
upper head (small): infratemporal surface and crest of the greater wing of sphenoid lower head (large): lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate
lateral pterygoid insertion
upper head :pterygoid fovea on the ant surface of the neck of the mandible
lower head: anterior margin of the articular disk and capsule of tmj
