pterygopalatine fossa Flashcards
boundaries of pterygopalatine fossa
anteriorly: maxilla
posteriorly: root of pterygoid process with a anterior surface of greater wing of sphenoid
medial: perpendicular plate of palatine bone with orbital and sphenoidal process
laterally: infratemporal fossa and pterygomaxillary fissure
superior: undersurface of body of sphenoid
inferior: pyramidal process of the of palatine bone
COMMUNICATIONS: anteriorly
orbital through medial part inferior orbital fissure
COMMUNICATIONS: posteriorly
with middle cranial fossa through foramen rotundum
foramen lacerum through pterygoid canal
pharynx through palatovaginal canal
COMMUNICATIONS: middle
with nose through sphenopalatine foramen
COMMUNICATIONS: laterally
infratemporal fossa through pterygomaxillary fissure
COMMUNICATIONS: inferiorly
to oral cavity through greater and lesser palatine canal
contents of pterygopalatine fossa
maxillary artery with branches
maxillary nerve and its two branches
posterior superior alveolar and orbital
pterygopalatine ganglion with fibers of maxillary nerve and autonomic nerves
maxillary nerve
arises from trigeminal ganglion
moves across the lateral wall of cavernous sinus leaves middle cranial fossa through foramen rotundum and crosses upper part of pterygoid fossa and continues as infraoribital
zygomatic terminal brances
2
zygomaticofacial
zygomaticotemporal
another branch that goes off from zygomaticotemporal
communicating branch of lacrimal nerve that as secretomotor fibers to lacrimal glands
zygomatic nerve enters what thorugh what
orbit through lateral part of infrerior orbiral fissure
infraoribital nerve course
branch of maxillary nerve
enters in the orbit through inferior orbital fissure
runs on the floor of the orbit and roof of maxillary sinus
then enter the infra oribital canal and then infra oribiral foramen
branches and it is accompanied by
palpebral
nasal
labial
accompanied by infraorbital branch of 3rd part of maxillary artery and the accompanying vein
middle superior alveolar nerve
comes off from the inferior orbital fissure
runs on the lateral wall of maxillary sinus and supplies upper premolars
anterior superior alveolar nerve
comes off from infra orbital canal runs through sinuous canal through anterior wall of maxillary sinus and supplies the upper incisors canine and anterior inferior part of nasal cavity
