parotid gland Flashcards
skin over the gland is supplied by
greater auricular nerve
apex of the gland
in the carotid triangle
and there u have the emerging cervical branch of facial nerve and both divisions of retromandibular vein
superior surface or base
cartilagenous part of external acoustic meatus
post part of tmj
superficial temporal vessels
auricotemporal nerve
the superficial surface is covered with
skin
superfacial fascia containing anterior branches of greater auricular nerve, preauricular or superfacila parorid lymph nodes pst fibers of platysma and risorius
parotid fascia
deep parotid lymph nodes (few)
anteromedial surface
the masseter lateral part of tmj pst part of ramus of mandible medial pterygoid emerging branches of facial nerve
posteromedial surface
mastoid process with sternocleidomastoid and pst belly of diagastric
styloid process with attachments
external carotid artery and facial nerve
internal carotid artery lies deep to styloid process
arteries within parotid gland
external carotid artery enters through the posteromedial surface
maxillary artery leaves through anteromedial surface
superficial temporal and transverse facial artery emerges throug ant surface
veins within parotid gland
retromandibular vein is formed inside the gland by joining of supeficial temporal vein with maxillary vein and at the apex it divides into ant and pst divisions
nerves within parotid gland
facial nerve enters the gland through postermedial surface and its branches leave through anteromedial surafce
facial nerve divides into 2 branches
temporal- zygomatic and temporal
cervicofacial- buccal marginal mandibular and cervical
blood supply and venous drainage of gland
blood-external carotid and its branches
venous- external jugular and internal jugular
parasympathetic supply to glandi
it is secretomotor. through auricotemporal
sympathetic nerves to gland
derived from plexus around the middle meningeal artery
sensory nerves to gland
auricotemporal nerve
fascial- greater temporal nerves
