Taste and Smell Flashcards
Gustation
taste, use chemoreceptors
Olfaction
smell, use chemoreceptors
Olfactory epithelium
the main organ for smelling, small yellowish patch on the roof of the nose, contains millions of olfactory sensory neurons. There is mucus just beneath the olfactory epithelium where the particles of things bind and dissolve and activate a specific receptor
Olfactory bulb
this is the part in the brain that the axons travel through to get to another part in the brain
Olfactory sensory neurons
each neurons has receptors for just one kind of smell
Fungiform papillae
projections on tongue that make it look rough, mushroom shaped
Taste bud
nestled inside of a lingual papillae, have a short lifespan of around 10 days, synapse with neurons to send sensory information to the facial nerve, the glossopharyngeal nerve, and the vagus nerve aka the sensory cortex
Gustatory taste epithelial cells
these are the taste bud cells that actually do the tasting
Basal cells
these are the taste bud cells that a new and waiting to replace the gustatory cells
Tastant
food particle
Types of lingual papillae
fungiform, foliate, filiform, and vallate or circuvallate
foliate papillae
looks like a leaf, has taste buds
Filiform papillae
string shaped, do not have taste buds, used to move things around
Vallate or circumvallate papillae
Has large grooves around the middle with taste buds
