Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Organization and naming of nerves
Goes from most superior to most inferior, roman numerals l-Xll
Olfactory nerve l
Sensory, smell,
-Lesion results in loss of smell on affected side
Optic ll
Involved in vision, sensory
-Lesion: blindness on affected side, loss of pupillary light reflex
Oculomotor lll
Somatic motor to four of the six muscles that move the eye
ANS: parasympathetic to sphincter papillae for pupil constriction
Lesion: eye deviation causing double vision, pupil dilation and loss of pupillary light reflex
Trochlear lV
Function: somatic motor to superior oblique eye muscle
Lesion: eye deviation causing double vision
Trigeminal V
Function: Has three branches, sensory, general sense from face to forehead, a lot of tongue and mouth
Motor: somatic motor muscles for chewing
Lesion: Loss of feeling in face and forehead or increased sensitivity to pain called Trigeminal neuralgia
Abducens Vl
Function: somatic motor to lateral rectus eye muscle
Lesion: medial deviation of eye causing double vision
Facial Vll
Function: sensory 2/3 of the tongue taste and somatic motor control of facial expressions
ANS: parasympathetic to salivary glands and lacrimal glands
Lesion: face paralysis called Bell’s palsy, decreased ability to taste and salivate
Vestibulocochlear Vlll
Function: Sensory vestibular senses balance, cochlear branch is hearing
Lesion: Vestibular would result in loss of balance and dizziness or vertigo, cochlear would result in loss of hearing
Glossopharyngeal lX
Function: somatic motor deals with swallowing motions and sensory deals with 1/3 taste of the tongue and sensory from pharynx and carotid sinus
ANS: parasympathetic to salivary glands
Lesion: trouble swallowing, loss of taste, decreased ability to detect blood pressure changes
Vagus X
Function: motor is involved in throat muscles and speech. Sensory is involved in taste, senses from the throat, thoracic and abdominal organs
ANS: parasympathetic to thoracic and abdominal organs, regulating things such as heart rate and respiration
Lesion: trouble swallowing, hoarse speech
Accessory Xl
Function: somatic motor to sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
Lesion: Muscle weakness, trouble turning head and raising scapula
Hypoglossal Xll
Function: somatic muscles to tongue and throat muscles
Lesion: tongue deviation towards side of lesion, trouble manipulating food with tongue
