T5 Flashcards
What do you do if you receive a code 9 on the bell buzzer?
Tell the signaller in the quickest way possible that police assistance is required at the next suitable stopping point
If you are making a propelling movement (max 20mph), what do you have to remember to do when approaching a Level Crossing?
Sound your horn until you get to the crossing
Can you start a journey from other than the maintenance depot, with a deflated air suspension? Explain
Yes, but only if WMT Control says it’s ok and you tell the signaller of any restrictions Control have given to you I.e. 45mph if passengers in affected vehicle, or linespeed if not
When you’re doing the train preparation checks, what three things are you looking for regarding the AWS functionality?
Is the AWS defective? (I.e. the horn can’t be stopped)
Is the AWS isolated?
Is the seal broken on the isolating switch?
When can you start a journey when the AWS is either defective, isolated or the seal has been broken?
To travel to the maintenance deport for repair, as long as you receive instruction from WMT Control and the signaller
If you’re concerned that the brakes aren’t working correctly and the signaller says he wants you to proceed…. what speed can you do (and why)?
REDUCED SPEED as necessary so as to maintain FULL CONTROL of the train
If more brakes have been isolated than is allowed (1 in 5), and the signaller says you should proceed, what speed can you travel at?
REDUCED SPEED as necessary so as to maintain FULL CONTROL of the train
What do you do if one of the doors is defective?
Lock the door
Remove the passengers from the vehicle
Lock saloon doors
Speak to WMT Control… can proceed normally if they give permission (notify signaller)
If one of the doors can’t be closed, can you continue forwards? Explain
Yes…..
Passengers must be transferred to another vehicle and saloon doors MUST be locked
Proceed at Caution
Can you start a journey from other than the maintenance depot, with defective or isolated DSD?
No, unless you are travelling to the maintenance depot for repair providing the signaller has given you permission
If the driving controls are defective (I.e. Train Control MCB) and the train proceeds forward, who is in the leading cab?
Competent person…. the driver is in another forward facing cab
(Remember to Temporary Isolate the TPWS in the active cab)
Can you start a journey from other than the maintenance depot, if EBS has been operated?
No, unless you are travelling to the maintenance depot for repair providing the signaller has given you permission
If a signal is only capable of showing a red or green aspect, if the signal is red and then changes to green, what should you be prepared to do?
Stop at the next stop signal
If a semaphore Distant Signal is showing clear but you get an AWS warning horn, what should you be prepared to do?
Stop at the next stop signal (unless the horn was for a warning board or emergency indicator)
For what reasons should you operate Pan Down, stop, and contact the signaller? (4)
OLE damaged
ADD or overheight valve operated
Line Light goes out and you have reset once to no affect
Fire
If the Line Light goes out, can you continue normally? Explain (4)
Yes, providing:
ADD has not operated
The OLE is not damaged
You Press Pan Up Reset and the Line Light is restored at the FIRST attempt
You can regain power
Can a TSR be moved?
Yes if details are published in the WON….. AND
All the boards (Warning Board, speed board, termination indicator) are moved in the direction of travel
OR
The Warning Board and speed board are moved closer to the termination indicator which stays where it is
Horn tone…. To give a warning to anyone on or near a running line
High and low
Horn tone…. To give an URGENT warning to anyone on or dangerously near to the line
High, multiple
Horn tone…. Whistle board
Low
Horn tone…. Depot or siding
Low
Horn tone…. Local or special code
High
Horn tone…. Wrong-direction movements
High 3x blasts at regular intervals
Horn tone…. To alert other trains they are in danger
High, long blasts

Accidental train division and can’t recouple…… what lights do you place on the divided portion:
1. Front
2. Rear
- White
- Red
Note that detonator protection is NO LONGER REQUIRED
If you are the assisting train entering a section to remove the rear of a divided train…… what does the signaller tell you (3) and what max speed would you enter the section at?
Signaller tells you
1. Exact location of the divided portion
2. Colour of light displayed on the divided portion (White front, red rear)
3. Authority to pass the signal at danger to enter the section
Caution, max speed 25mph
If you are entering a section to remove the rear of a divided train, what is the maximum speed?
Caution, max 25mph
If your train has failed and you can’t contact the signaller, when would you carry out emergency protection in the rear? (2)
Emergency Special Working, or
TBW….
…. is in place
After laying emergency protection you must return back to your train, unless…..?
You still haven’t been able to contact the signaller, in which case you carry on as far as necessary until you have done so
If you have had to lay emergency protection following a train failure (I.e. you haven’t spoken to the signaller and you are in a TBW or ESW area), why might you stay at the emergency protection point instead of returning to your train?
You have spoken to the signaller and because of poor visibility it is best for you to remain where you are and wait for the assisting train to arrive (hand danger signal required)
Assistance protection, detonators are no longer required. What is the new procedure?
Failed train puts either red or white light on whichever end the assisting train will arrive from
Signaller informs failed driver that the assisting train is ready to enter the section
Signaller creates a 3 way GSM-R call and failed driver informs assisting driver of the exact location
If the visibility is poor AND the signaller can’t create the 3 way call, the failed driver must travel 300 metres from train and display a red flag
Assisting train proceed at Caution, max 25mph, radio not to be used during movement
If your train has failed and the visibility is poor AND the signaller can’t create a 3 way GSM-R call, you will have to leave your cab….. and do what?
(What about a signal, and a tunnel entrance?)
Travel 300 metres in the direction the assisting train will arrive and display a hand danger signal when it arrives
OR
Travel to a SIGNAL that is less than 300 metres away providing the signaller confirms that the signal is protecting your train….. and display a hand danger signal when the assisting train arrives
&
Travel to a TUNNEL ENTRANCE that is less than 300 metres away….. and display a hand danger signal when the assisting train arrives
If you are the assisting train, it is poor visibility and the signaller can’t create a 3 way GSM-R call….. it has been determined that the failed driver is meeting you (no dets, just a danger handsignal), what must you do if
1. You approach a tunnel?
2. The driver is not at the point you have been told?
- Only enter the tunnel if you have picked up the driver, or you know for certain that the failed driver is not in the tunnel and that the tunnel is clear
- Stay at the location and wait for the failed driver to arrive
If you are the failed driver and because of poor visibility and the signaller can’t create a 3 way GSM-R call….. it was decided that you still walk 300 metres and show a hand danger signal to the assisting driver (no dets required)…. what do you say to the driver when you get in the cab?
Exact location of the failed train
Can you accept a yellow handsignal at a signal as authority to pass it?
Only if
1. You have stopped your train and the handsignaller has given you the instructions
2. The signaller or Pilot has already instructed you to obey the handsignaller
