What is a Co-acting signal?
Provided to give both a short and long distance sighting of a signal where the main signal has sighting issues Repeats the exact same signal as the main signal
160
What is a Banner Repeater?
Signals that are provided on the approach to certain signals which have restricted sighting, I.e. curves, bridges, buildings, trees
161
What does a Distant signal at proceed mean?
All the associated stop signals worked from the same signal box are clear
162
When being signalled through a signal at danger via a handsignaller or Pilot...... if on the approach to the signal the hand signaller shows you a yellow flag, can you proceed through the signal?
No Stop the train and receive the relevant information from them The only exception is when the signaller has already told you the relevant information and told you to obey the handsignaller instruction, only then can you continue without stopping
163
LEARN....... When passing a signal at danger, what must you check are in the correct position and at what max speed over them?
Points Switch Diamonds Swing nose crossings Approach at Caution, MAX SPEED 15 MPH
164
When passing a signal at danger, when can you proceed up to 50 mph? (5)
SLW in the wrong direction Modified Working TBW ESW When passing 2 main aspects at danger
165
When passing a signal at danger when can you proceed up to LINESPEED?
SLW in the right direction (as long as you're not the first train) Single Line with token
166
If the gates have been left open at a Level Crossing......... what should you do?
Report it to the signaller in the quickest way possible. He may ask you to close them
167
If you are told to pass a Level Crossing at Caution........ what should you do?
Do not pass over it until you are sure it is safe to do so
168
If you discover a defect or irregularity with Level Crossing equipment....... what should you do?
Report it to the signaller in the QUICKEST WAY POSSIBLE
169
What is the TPWS track equipment?
OSS: Over Speed System TSS: Train Stop System
170
What distance is the TPWS set away from a buffer stop on a passenger platform and what speed will it operate above?
60/65 metres 10 mph (aim to be at 7 mph at the grids)
171
Where would an AWS cancelling indicator board be positioned normally?
180 metres after the magnet concerned
172
Diamond shape AWS with red cross = AWS =
Going the wrong way along a line AWS with red cross = Start of AWS gap AWS = End of AWS gap (However if there is a TSR or ESR in this section those warning boards will have an AWS magnet)
173
Circle with AWS written in it and red cross = Square with AWS =
Going the correct way along a line Circle with AWS written in it and red cross = Start of AWS gap Square with AWS = End of AWS gap
174
What AWS indications will the driver get when: - Colour light signal is showing green - Distant signal is clear
Clear bell signal and black visual indicator
175
Is the AWS capable of distinguishing between a red, yellow or double yellow aspect?
No..... you get the horn regardless
176
What does an AWS temporary isolation/fault indicator mean when the light is: 1. Off 2. Flashing yellow 3. Steady yellow
1. AWS normal 2. AWS fault 3. AWS isolated
177
What does the AWS yellow/black indicator mean?
Warning horn has been acknowledged
178
What does the AWS black indicator mean?
Signal is showing green (or distant signal is clear)
179
Are AWS magnets provided at semaphore stop signals?
No (they are only provided at Distant signals)
180
When transitioning from a lower speed area to a higher speed area when can you start accelerating the train?
As soon as the WHOLE train has passed through the lower speed area
181
The AWS Temporary magnet will be provided with a TSR warning board, usually at 180 metres, but what is the lowest figure this can be reduced to if the circumstances require?
45 metres
182
If a slower TSR zone is immediately after a higher TSR zone...... will a Termination board be provided at the end of the first TSR zone?
No, you will just get another TSR Warning Board with the new lower speed on
183
If there is insufficient distance to arrange the warning boards for consecutive TSR's in the normal way, what will they do? (I.e. There is a 30 mph restriction, followed by a 20 mph restriction)
They will place the second warning board at least 45 metres away from the first warning board. The AWS magnet for the second warning board will be placed immediately after the first warning board. (I.e. AWS – Warning Board for 30 and AWS for the second Warning Board – Warning Board for 20 over 45 metres away - Speed commencement Board for 30 – Speed commencement Board for 20 – Termination Indicator)
184
If the TSR speed INCREASES within the TSR zone how will the signs show this?
There will just be a Speed Indicator Board at the speed increase highlighting the higher speed, everything else will be normal (I.e. there is no extra AWS and Warning Board for the higher speed)
185
If someone falls from your train what must you do?
Tell the signaller if someone has definitely fallen.... or you think someone has fallen Transfer passengers to another vehicle and lock saloon doors Don't move train until told to by signaller
