T3 Flashcards
When can you move a train again whilst working under Permissive Working….. when your train has come to a stand? (3)
Coupling or Uncoupling is taking place
If signaller gives permission (don’t forget to tell the signaller when the movement is complete)
If signal is cleared for the movement
Moving a train before station work is complete (signal is red)….. what do you need and what do you need to do? (And what do you do when the movement is complete?)
Get permission from signaller to move towards the signal at danger
Tell Guard and PIC of dispatch you have permission
Tell signaller when movement complete
Where would you place the detonators on a multi-track line if you have an accident (and can’t get in touch with the signaller or he can’t offer signal protection)?
On every obstructed line 1 ¼ miles in the direction of approaching trains
After an accident, once the signaller has told you that signal protection has been provided, what must you still then do?
Ask the signaller if you still need to lay TCOCs……
If you do, then:
TCOC on all obstructed lines
TCOC on your line if derailed
Following a collison, if WMT Control tells you it is safe to proceed, are you then allowed to take power and proceed?
No….. you have to tell the signaller what Control said and seek permission to move
If you have collided with something on the railway and think the damage has increased the width or height of the train, who do you need to speak to and what will they tell you?
Speak to WMT Control. They will tell you if it safe to proceed or to stay put and await a Rolling Stock Technician to inspect it
If you have collided with something on the railway, what do you need to do regarding the integrity of the train?
Stop train and check for damage which might affect its safe movement
If your train has sustained a heavy impact what needs to be done before it can be returned into service or moved?
Not allow it into service until a Rolling Stock Technician has inspected it
If you are early on the scene of a serious incident, what is something you need to do regarding the cab and preserving evidence?
Lock all cab doors

What is the purpose of an Intermediate Block Home signal, and how can you recognise it?
They allow you to split an Absolute Block section so you can run more trains through it at the same time. The sign is a white rectangle with a thick black line through the centre
During shunting, your train is required to start ahead of the signal…… what must you do?
Contact the signaller before moving
What signal controls the entrance to the Absolute Block section?
Section signal
What instructions apply with yellow shunting signals (in the ON and OFF positions)?
When the disc is in the ON position……. STOP and you can only proceed if you are going into a siding or shunt neck and not on to the mainline.
If it is in the OFF position then you can proceed as far as the line is clear
What is a track circuit and what they are used for?
There is a small current running through the rail so that when a train is present on the track it shorts the circuit and this is indicated to the signaller on his panel
Withdrawing Single Line Working: If you are the first train through, what might the signaller instruct you to do?
Stop and inform anyone on or near the line that SLW has been withdrawn
First train over the single line (with Pilot, travel at Caution and 15 mph over points): Why will the Pilot instruct you to stop at times?
To tell anyone working on or near the line that SLW has begun
Tell any crossing keeper about the SLW arrangements
Check points are set correctly
If you reach a diverging junction before you reach the full emergency protection limit, what must you do?
Place 3 detonators before the junction.
Decide which line the next train is most likely to come from and place 3 detonators there, and then do the same on the other line
Track Circuit Operating Clips (TCOCs)…. Do you protect other lines first, or your own? And when does it become the other way around?
Protect other lines first and then your own
Protect your own first if your entire train has derailed
Can you pass a signal at danger within a possession or worksite?

When an emergency switch off is granted, the person who requested it is given a reference number. How is this number made up and what is its purpose?
Number is made up from the 24 hour clock, at the time you call the ECO. When contacting the ECO this reference number should be quoted
If a portion of a divided train is to be left on the single line and you are taking the front portion forward, what must you do prior to leaving the single line?
