3.2 X Flashcards
How long do you have to prep a
1. Single Unit
2. Double Unit
- 17 minutes
- 23 minutes
At the depot, who do you need to speak to to find out where your Unit is…… and what would you use to access it?
Person In Charge of Shunting
Authorised Walking Route
What risks are associated with preparing a train duties? (6) (3 + SEB)
‘Not to be moved’ boards
Cables, pipes, hoses are still attached
Scotches and derailers present
STAFF working on or around the Unit
EMERGENCY safety equipment missing
Not checking the BRAKES properly
What must you ensure if the Uncouple button is pressed?
That the Unit is separated
How will you be aware of a drum switch problem during coupling? (3)
Passcomm light will flash red
Audible alarm will go off
Unable to get brake release
What risks are associated with coupling? (3)
SPAD
Going too fast could cause damage to vehicles
Potential for injury/death I.e. could get crushed
In train assistance, if a train couples up to you and you have to drive from other than the leading cab with full driving control (I.e. propelling)…. what is the max speed and what would you have to do in that driving cab?
20mph
Temporary Isolate TPWS
What risks are associated with fault finding? (3)
Not getting the line blocked if you need to go outside
Injury to yourself
Mis-communication with the signaller may cause an operational incident (delays)
What are the rules if brakes are isolated on the rear vehicle and you are carrying on from the leading cab? (3)
5mph max speed (no brake continuity)
Guard to travel in the rear and operate the parking brake in an emergency
Ensure gradient is not greater than 1 in 40
If only the Pantograph is damaged…..
1. Can you couple up normally?
2. What must you remember to do before moving away?
If you are then driving from the leading cab with full driving control…..
3. What is the max speed?
- Yes, couple up electrically
- Must ensure you isolate the Pantograph
- Linespeed if you have full driving control
What could be the fault if the VCB and Line Light are both unlit?
OLE fault
How can you check the brake pressure on the outside of the Unit?
Brake Chamber Gauge on the TS Number 1 end
(It shows brake cylinder pressure ONLY on that TS vehicle)
If the Train Control MCB trips in both cabs, you will need to be assisted. If the assistance comes from the rear and you will be proceeding forwards….. what are your actions?
Couple mechanically and pneumatically (so as not to transfer the problem electrically)
Then…. BIC all of your failed Unit & rotational test
Drive from leading end of the assisting train, remember to Temporary isolate the TPWS, proceed at 5mph max
What are you immediate actions if the ADD operates? (3)
Press Pan Down button immediately
Stop immediately
Contact the controlling signaller
If you are the assisting train, who will tell you where to take the failed Unit?
Controlling signaller
What are the Traction Control MCB symptoms in….
1. DMS
2. TS
- Loss of traction and regenerative braking on the affected vehicle
- Total loss of traction power on the Unit….. VCB opens, so the Line Light goes out and the VCB light comes on
If you BIC a Unit or operate the Traction Control Cut Out switch…. what must you also remember to do afterwards?

Any damage to the windscreen
Any damage to the windscreen wipers
Lights are ok, no broken glass
TAC looks ok and the electrical covers are closed
Walk around the Unit…..
Drum switch is in the correct position
DIC is in line (should be horizontal)
Lifeguard is undamaged
Axle Box is ok
Primary and secondary air suspensions are ok (rubber leaves and air bags)
General condition of the train (I.e. windows, body of train)

Check all cables are undamaged (I.e. 1500 and 240 AC etc)
MRPCC are in downward position
Transformer Qualitrol valve is not sticking out
If you have to isolate the air suspension due to one of the air bags being damaged….. after you have isolated the relevant ASIC on the vehicle (WMT Control will tell you which one), what do you have to remember to do afterwards?
Drain all the surge tanks on the affected vehicle
What does the safety valve look like on the Transformer?
It is a shiny brass valve
If the FIP in DMS A says you have got a Traction Fault, but the Local Fault light is not lit….. where is the problem?
DMS B
What if the Main Reservoir Pipe bursts in the DMS lead vehicle and you’re not getting assisted…… what are your actions? (remember Train Wire 13…..)
Operate the MRPCC (Main Reservoir Pipe Coupling Cocks)
BIC the DMS and do rotational test
Lock doors out of use and remove passengers
Change ends and EBS in the rear (you will now be driving from this rear cab….. remember EBS does not resolve faults in the leading cab which is why you operate it in the rear cab)
Guard travels in the (what is now) rear cab and operates the parking brake in an emergency
5mph max
During prep, when walking around the outside of the Unit…. how can you tell that one of the Isolating Cocks have been isolated?
Look through the windows on the manifold cover and if you see white then it means that something has been isolated
