T4 - L5 MHC and transplant rejection Flashcards
what does allogeneic mean?
tissues or cells which are genetically dissimilar and hence immunologically incompatible
what is Major Histocompatibilty Complex (MHC)?
cell surface proteins required for the immune system to recognise foreign/self molecules
what is “second set rejection”
e.g.
If a second skin graft is done on the same patient with the same skin graft, it is called the
“second set” rejection
- gets rejected much quicker → Proving memory response
what is HLA?
human leukocyte antigen (HLA)
what is the difference between MHC and HLA?
MHC found in all vertebrae
HLA only found in humans
HLA is a type of MHC
on which cells will you find MHC class I?
Found on all nucleated cells
so not found on RBCs
on which cells will you find MHC class II?
specialised APC
what type of MHC would you find on a SMC?
MHC class I
what type of MHC would you find on a macrophage?
MHC class II
what type of MHC would you find on a dendritic cell?
MHC class II
what is the function of the MHC?
present antigens (self or foreign) to T cells
