T2 - L8 Antibacterial Concepts Flashcards
what is MIC?
minimum inhibitory concentration
the minimum amount of
antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth
is the MIC the same for all bacteria?
no
- not a fixed value
- varies between species and within species
if the MIC value is increased what should we do?
inc dosage of antibiotic to get above MIC Value
what is meant by PD?
pharmacodynamic (PD) target
are antibiotics more readily absorbed orally or intravenously?
IV
is antibiotic associated diarrhoea associated with oral or IV antibiotics?
both
do oral or IV antibiotics have side effects such as thrombophlebitis, thrombosis and infection?
IV
risks of IV access side effects
when would IV antibiotics be considered?
- Intravenous antibiotics can be important to quickly and reliably achieve targeted serum antibiotic concentrations.
- some antibiotics are only available as IV
- patient nil by mouth
what are the benefits of early antibiotic therapy?
- mortality and morbid benefit
- prevent infection metastases
- can use narrow spectrum antibiotics
- can administer orally
what are the disadvantages of early antibiotic therapy?
- reduce the time available to do cults
- reduced chance of giving targeted therapy
- inc chance of wrong antibiotic/not enough being given
- insufficient time to check allergies
if I drug is ototoxic what does it pose damage to?
Ototoxicity is the property of being toxic to the ear (oto-), specifically the cochlea or auditory nerve
if I drug is nephrotoxic what does it pose damage to?
kidneys
why do you need Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis?
prevent cellulitis/infection of the surgical wound
when should you give Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis?
in the hour before surgery (within the 60min)
what is a characteristic reaction/side effect of penicillins/beta-lactms?
allergic reaction
