T2 L8 Basal ganglia Flashcards
What are the levels of hierarchy of motor control?
High
Middle
Low
Describe the high level of motor control
Function: strategy
Structures: neocortex & basal ganglia
Describe the middle level of motor control
Function: tactics
Structures: motor cortex, cerebellum
Describe the low level of motor control
Function: executive
Structures: brainstem, spinal cord
What makes up the pallidum?
Globus pallidus interna and globus pallidus externa
What makes up the caudate striatum?
Caudate nucleus & lentiform nucleus (putamen & pallidus)
What makes up lentiform nucleus?
Putamen and pallidus
What divides the corpus striatum?
Internal capsule
What is the internal capsule?
White matter of ascending and descending tracts
What makes up the neostriatum?
Caudate nucleus and putamen
What are the 4 basal ganglia loops?
Motor loop
Occulomotor loop
Prefrontal loop
Limbic loop
Describe the direct pathway
Cortex excites striatum –> inhibits GPi –> no signal produced so thalamus excites cortex
What is the function of the direct pathway?
To promote movement
Describe the indirect pathway
Cortex excites striation –> inhibits GPe –> no signal produced so STN excites GPi –> inhibits thalamus –> cortex is inhibited
What is the function of the indirect pathway?
Inhibit movement
