What does the initial search for an aircraft consist of?
A/c flying at high altitude in hope of hearing the survivors ELT.
What is an ELT?
Emergency Locator Tramsmittor
What do the follow up searches for an aircraft consist of?
A/c flying at lowers altitudes using a zig-zag movement, following the a/c last known location.
During this the a/c fires green pyrotechnics at regular intervals (10-15) minutes as well as before and after turning. When survivors see the pyrotechnics they must try attract the attention of the a/c.
How does an aircraft show they have acknowledges the survivors signal?
Day time - rocking wings
Night time - flashing lights
What are the principles of survival?
- Protection: make shelter to protect from the elements
- Location: locate prominent position within the vicinity of the a/c, if possible use ELT and ground signals to attract a/c
- Water: use a/c supplies if available, ration portions and do not drink seawater
- Food: not immediately necessary
What are the polar survival principles?
- Use fire for survival
- Melt ice to drink
- Conserve temperature (COLD)
What is the meaning of COLD in relation to polar survival?
keep clothes CLEAN
avoid OVERHEATING
use LAYERS of clothing
keep clothes DRY
What are the desert survival principles?
- Protect from the heat
- Keep warm at night
- Wear gloves
- Look out for poisonous animals
What are the jungle survival principles?
- Make camp away from swamp areas
- Some fruits contain large amounts of water
- Test food for edibility
What are the sea survival principles?
- Be aware of Cold Water Shock (difficulty breathing)
- Keep clear of oil covered water
- Never drink sea water
- Keep head out of water
How can you attract attention in a survival situation (6)?
- Bright colours
- Torches, lights and mirrors
- Fly a flag
- Ground to air visuals
- Stay near the a/c
- Light fires
