INDICATION FOR A SURGERY DIET
A
- Reconstructing or repairing surgery to the GIT
- Following oral or plastic surgery of the face and neck
- In patients who cannot chew properly
- Oesophageal or pharyngeal disorder that interferes with handling of solid foods
- Also as a conversion between clear liquid diet and fiber-restricted or regular diet

- Dysphagia
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Diverticulosis

PURPOSE OF A SURGERY DIET
A
- This diet would have to be individualised
- In medical procedures regarding the GIT a low residue diet
- To prevent forming of an obstructing bolus
- To prevent damage to the surgical work
- For cosmetic reasons a normal diet
- Or a dysphasia chart: Clear fluid → Full fluid → Puree foods → Soft foods → Normal Diet

NOTES TO CONSIDER WHEN IMPLEMENTING A SURGERY DIET
A
- Consult a dietician for individualisation
- Liquid supplements should be refrigerated after opening and needs to be used within 24 hours after opening
- Eliminate milk and milk products from diet directly after surgery since it produces excessive mucus
- In use during Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis in combination with corticosteroids indicated a possible need to increase calcium and protein in the diet
