INDICATION OF A MONOAMINE OXIDASE RESTRICTED DIET
– MAOIs drug found in: • antidepressants • medication for Parkinson’s Disease, and • Antibiotics. – Amine intolerance
PURPOSE OF A MONOAMINE OXIDASE RESTRICTED DIET
– Prevention of serious hypertensive drug-food interactions between monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tyramine.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS OF A MONOAMINE OXIDASE RESTRICTED DIET
– Healthy people not on MAOIs
NOTES TO CONSIDER WHEN IMPLEMENTING A MONOAMINE OXIDASE RESTRICTED DIET
– Tyramine increases as foods age or spoil.
– Eat fresh or frozen foods and avoid spoiled foods.
– Promptly refrigerate or freeze foods; don’t store at room temperature.
– Use or toss leftovers within 48 hours.
– Tyramines are not destroyed by cooking, but levels may be reduced by washing the food in tap water.
– Eat allowed fresh meats within 3 days.
– Eat allowed cheese within 3-4 weeks.
– Limit caffeine intake. While there is no tyramine in caffeine, consuming too much caffeine can result in high blood pressure.
– Continue this diet for 2-4 weeks after stopping your MAOI’s.

Fresh or frozen meats, poultry, fish, and shellfish
Eggs
Nuts, peanut butter
In limited amounts: fresh sausage and pepperoni, canned sardines, pâté, bully beef
Most legumes
TO AVOID: Liver Smoked or dried meats, e.g. biltong, salami, chorizo Smoked, pickled, or dried fish Meat processed with tenderizers Meat extracts Fermented and dry sausage Meat products near or beyond the expiration date Canned meats/ fish Snow peas, lentils

ALLOWED: All commercial breads (except sourdough) All baked goods Hot and cold cereals Pasta, rice, grits Potatoes
TO AVOID:
Cheese breads
Crackers
Sourdough and fresh, homemade, yeast-leavened breads
VEGETABLES ALLOWED AND TO AVOID IN A MONOAMINE OXIDASE RESTRICTED DIET
ALLOWED:
All fresh, frozen, and canned vegetables (as long as they are not overripe or spoiled), except those on the right.
TO AVOID:
Fermented vegetables, e.g. sauerkraut, kimchi, Chinese pea pods, fermented pickles
Fermented, decomposed or spoiled vegetables
FRUITS ALLOWED AND TO AVOID IN A MONOAMINE OXIDASE RESTRICTED DIET
ALLOWED:
All fresh, frozen, and canned fruit (as long as they are not overripe or spoiled).
TO AVOID:
Fermented, decomposed or spoiled fruit
Bananas, prunes, figs and raisins.
BEVERAGES ALLOWED AND TO AVOID IN A MONOAMINE OXIDASE RESTRICTED DIET
ALLOWED:
Juice
Milk
Carbonated beverages
Decaffeinated coffee and tea
In limited amounts: chocolate drinks; coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks;
White wine; bottled or canned beer; and clear spirits
TO AVOID:
Tap beer, ale, chianti and vermouth wines, sherry, champagne, and mixed drinks

ALLOWED: • Boiling • Steaming • Blending • Braising • Sautéing • Grilling • Roasting
TO AVOID:
• Deep-fat frying
• Frying

Like normal meal.
Best to use fresh herbs, fruit or vegetables.
