INDICATION FOR A BLAND DIET
– Peptic and duodenal ulcers
– Hiatus hernia
– Patients with high levels of acid secretion
– Acid reflux sufferers
PURPOSE OF A BLAND DIET
– Diet free from CAPS (caffeine, alcohol, pepper and spices) - irritate the intestinal mucosa or promote acid secretion
– Combined with a low fiber diet for sufferers of GI disturbances
CONTRA-INDICATION OF A BLAND DIET
– Milk-alkali syndrome
– Hypercalcemia
– Hyperparathyroidism
– Increased gastric acid secretion due to milk
– Adverse reactions to puree diets and low fiber diets
NOTES FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF A BLAND DIET
– Individualize the diet
– Person’s unique reaction to certain foods
– Not all foods excluded
– Prescription medications – available
– Well-balanced diet & need enough protein and nutrients to promote healing
– Bland diet = difficult (A lot of foods may be irritants to the gut)
– Differentiated why patients suffer GI symptoms (other factors)
