How can you support a service user with a learning disability at home?
By ensuring that the person has access to all rooms at home, eg no stairs as well as ensuring that all facilities are within reach and not at a floor level, eg electrical sockets and if necessary, a hoist available from bedroom to bathrooms.
How can you support a service user with a learning disability in an educational setting?
By ensuring that the service user has access to classrooms and laboratories, accommodation for wheelchair access for wheelchair users. Ensuring that disabled children have access to play and exercise facilities and that the curriculum is adapted to meet their needs for example language used in lessons should respect the dignity of people with disability.
How can you support a service user with a learning disability in the work place?
By providing awareness and training for work colleagues and a support worker to help the service user in the work place and extra time, if necessary, to complete work tasks.
How can you support a service user with a learning disability in the leisure setting?
By providing accessible changing facilities, suitable signage e.g braille for those with visual impairment and access to adapted seating and spaces for elevated wheelchair viewing.
What are the benefits for people in residential care?
Trained staff meet people’s needs and support them.
Specialist support is available for those with more complex care needs.
Other residents and staff provide companionship.
A range of stimulating activities is offered.
What are the Difficulties for people in residential care?
Social care workers have to support people to overcome the difficulties of residential care: such as losing some or all of their independence, having reluctance to leave there own homes, isolation from friends and family and the cost of care.
