Occupational standards, according to the UK commission for Employment and Skills (NOS) National Occupational Standards are statements of the standards of performance individuals must achieve when carrying out functions in the workplace, together with specifications of the underpinning knowledge and understanding.

One of the standards for people who work in health and social care, and for which organisations provide a code of practice, is how to receive visitors. Some examples of Performance criteria for meeting visitors are:
Talk to the visitor to find out why they are visiting.
Provide support to the visitor according to their needs.
Ensure that any information given to a visitor is accurate.
Maintain confidentiality.
Seek help if unable to deal with a situation.
Ensure the visiting area is safe.
