A

Reasons why people do not get access to health and social care include barriers such as specific needs, individual preferences and financial, geographical, social and cultural factors.

What specific needs may people have that cause barriers to services?

A

People with learning or physical disabilities
People with mental ill health
Older people
Children
Refugees
People transitioning from one sex to another.
For example, people with mental ill health might not be able to ask for help, or they might need an advocate or miss appointments. A person who is unable to read would have difficulty completing forms.

What individual prefrences may influence barriers to services?

A

People with religious and/or cultural beliefs who reject certain medicines.
People who exercise their right to be treated in a local hospital.
Women who prefer to receive care from a women.
People with terminal illness who choose not to have treatment
People with mental ill health who may be unable to make decisions for themselves at a particular point in time.
An older person who wants to remain independent.

What other barriers may there be to accessing health and social care services?

A

Financial, eg some people may be able to pay for personal, private care.
Social, eg. rough sleepers are unlikely to get the health and social care they need
Cultural, eg. if English is not their first language.
Geographical, eg. people who live in certain areas may not get the same level of service as others, for example fertility treatments are less available.
