A

Empowerment means giving individuals information and support so they can take informed decisions and make choices about their lives in order to live as independently as possible.

A

Rights are entitlements that everyone should receive. Peoples rights are protected by the laws of the UK such as the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Equality Act 2010.

How can a professional empower a child?

A

Where young children are involved, it is hard for a professional to empower them in the same way they would an adult. They may not understand what they are being told or what they are expected to do. Using appropriate language so they are able to understand the treatment or the condition they may have.

A

Supporting the right by promoting independence through freedom, choice and appropriate support, for example allowing an older people to choose where they wish to live, either on their or in a residential care setting as well as supporting a person with learning difficulties so they can live independently and safely.

How can you empower the express needs and preferences of a service user?

A

Supporting the right by providing active support to enable choice consistent with individual beliefs, cultures, and preferences. Providing support with choices about the food they eat, the clothes they eat, the religious practice, whether they’d like to be treated by a male or female professional. Using methods such as petitions to put forward needs and preferences, and raise concerns with public authorities, supporting those who need help to express their needs and preferences.

How can you promote safety and security within health and social care practices?

A

By changing legislation, ban on smoking in public places.
By dealing with conflict by applying clear policies and training, applying policies regarding residents with dementia who assault staff they fail to recognise, and what to do if the communication breaks down between social workers and other agencies.
By protecting them from risk or harm, implementing procedures and training, applying measures to deal with violent behaviour of people attending A&E who are affected by alcohol or drugs, including provision of security staff in hospitals.
By encouraging behaviour change using education and training such as healthy eating as well as language which is accessible to SU.
Balancing individual rights with those other service users and staff, providing clear training and policies so all are cared for a protected appropriately.

A

By providing clear guidelines for practice and complaints procedures, registering complaints, investigating them and receiving feedback, official recognition of and investigations into abuse and representing cases where some treatments are available in some areas but not others, known as NHS postcode lottery.
