What is meant by Early years care
Early years care for specific needs is provided in a range of settings, including homes, schools, hospitals and also in special units for children with severe physical and learning disabilities.
What are children’s specific needs?
Some children have very specific care needs, these include children who have a learning disability, have a physical disability, exhibit behaviour which challenges, have severe illnesses and have been victims of abuse or neglect.
How is care provided for children?
Care is through 5 main providers,
Parents
Other family members and friends.
Teachers/teaching assistants/ support in nursery or playgroup from qualified nursery assistants.
Specialist support workers, e.g. for children with learning or physical disabilities.
Specialist medical staff who treat children (paediatricians) They work in settings such as hospitals like great Ormond Street, which provides specialised care for very ill children.
What is the carers role?
When caring for children, carers should follow the correct procedures.
Keeping children safe.
Ensuring a healthy environment.
Providing an accessible learning environment.
Encouraging children’s learning and development, including play.
Enabling children to make a positive contribution.
Ensuring the welfare of the children is paramount.
Ensuring that information about a child remains confidential.
Working in partnership with the parents of the child.
Ensuring that children do not experience discrimination.
Not being judgemental.
Promoting children’s rights.
What are children’s entitled to?
According to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, all children are entitled to learn and development in three prime areas and four specific core areas: PRIME AREAS Communication and language Physical development Personal, social and emotional development CORE AREAS Literacy Mathematics Understanding the world Expressive arts and design
