What is stress?
Negative response of the body to a threat, causing anxiety
What is eustress
A positive response of the body to a threat
What are some cognitive stress responses?
- anxiety
- fear
- aggression
What are some of the somatic stress responses?
- shaking
- sweating
What is a stressor?
The cause of stress
Examples of stressors
- Injury
- Importance of games
- Good opposition
- Rewards e.g. prize money and contracts
- Fear of failure e.g. being watch by significant others, role models and scouts
What does cognitive stress cause ?
Irrational thoughts —> attentional narrowing
What does somatic stress involve?
- increased HR
- temperature increase
- sweating
- nausea
- muscular tension
What are methods to reduce somatic stress?
- biofeedback
- progressive muscle relaxation
What is bio feedback?
Devices used to help recognise the physical changes that happen under stress
They measure HR, BR, Muscle tension, Temperature or electrical activity
Recognised when stressed and use techniques to decrease it
What is progressive muscle relaxation?

What is centering?
- breathing control whilst relaxing chest and shoulders
- slow breathing diverts attention from stressful situation
What is breathing control?
Controlling and concentrating on breath depth and rate
Performer becomes less distracted
What are the responses to cognitive stress?
- Thought stopping
- Positive self talk
What is thought stopping ?
- using a trigger to remove unhelpful thoughts
- redirects to more positive thoughts
