What are the benefits of setting goals?
- allows targets to be met
- provides motivation
- performer becomes task persistent
- increases confidence
- sustains effort
- lowers social loafing
- lowers arousal / anxiety
- increases commitment
What are the types of goals?
Performance goals
Outcome goals
Process goals
What are the characteristics of outcome goals ?
- end game product
- goalset against performance of others
-standard of performance is second to the result - if achievable, maintains motivation and focus
What are the characteristics of performance goals?
- focussed on getting a better performance
- specific standard
- can lose event but still have met goals
- sometimes can be broken down into smaller parts of the skill
What are the characteristics of process goals?
-Based on improving technique
- improvement in a certain part of skill should improve whole skill
What sport uses outcome goals?
Football

Athletics

Any sport
Disadvantages of outcome goals
- focus on gaining a prize can cause basis for comparison and more stress
- can damage motivation if goal is seen as unachievable
Advantages of process/performance goals
- decreases anxiety levels
- provide consistent motivation
What is the acronym for goal setting?

What makes a goal specific?
- clear & concise
E.g. using data
E.g. improving defence = too vague, improve 50/50s shoulder contact

Using assessment to obtain data (allowing comparison and progress)

Performer should be able to reach their goal

What makes a goal realistic?
Goals need go to be able t be reached
What makes a goal time bound?
- short and long term goals need to be identified so all concerned have a deadline to live up to
- increases motivation
Why do you need to evaluate a goal?
- coach or player evaluates
- what went well + Even better if
- performer can see what to do and what not to do next time

- if goal is not. Et / is slow, can be repeated or goal can be altered if needs be
