What are the features that a group has?

What is collective identity?
- where a team can be recognised by wearing same uniform / kit / colour
- develops affiliation which creates motivation + sense of belonging
What is interaction?
- the way players work together to complete a task
- are they loud or quiet / playful or serious
What is communication?
- how messages are sent within the team to complete a task
- non verbal and verbal / coded plays
What is a shared goal or purpose?
- something the whole group aims towards
- achieving helps to bind together so they commit to each other + work hard to achieve - raises motivation
What is task cohesion?
- task based
- outcome based
What is social cohesion?
- working together
- interaction
Name all the parts of Tuckman’s model?
- forming
- storming
- norming
- performing
What does forming consist of?
- getting to know each other , strengths + weaknesses , will people fit in
- developing social relationships
- reliant on the coach to bring a group together
What does storming consist of?
- infighting + conflict as people establish roles and positions
- confrontations with leaders
What does norming consist of?
- cooperation, conflicts = resolved
- team begins to unify + cooperate, focussing on achieving goals
- standards / norms = accepted + cohesion develops
- motivation + success rise
What does performing consist of?
- common goals, success, support each other + understand roles
- motivation + enjoyment = high
- respect for other members and leaders are high
How long does it take to have a good group dynamic?
- time taken in each stage changes
- settled teams welcome new players but representative teams may take longer to settle
