Define commercialisation
the process of attempting to gain money from an activity e.g. sport
Define sponsorship
when a company pays for their products to be publicly displayed / advertised, usually as an attempt to increase the sales of their goods
Define merchandising
the practice of which the brand / image from one ‘product’ is used to sell another, e.g. professional sport.
What happened to sport in the first half of the 20th century?
- radio + cinema became a part of commercialised mass entertainment industry
- football = largest UK sporting activity
- max wage 4k a week
- pros max wage abolished in mid 20th cent. - PFA strike
What happened in late 20th / 21st century?
- Football had a massive increase in commercialism
- salary increase with bosman ruling giving freedom of contract to players
- transport further developed
- technology developed (e.g. hawk-eye + VAR)
How Has the emergence of female footballers emerged to modern day?
- increased media coverage (BT sport / sky - WSL)
- More female role models (performers / coaches / officials)
- More provision via PE programmes (lessons / extra- curricular)
- increased approval / encouragement (support from FA, like games at Wembley)
- more clubs forming (local + pro)
- increased participation (grass roots and elite levels)

How have elite female officials in football emerged over time?
- end of 20th century, there were limited female officials in the football league
- Wendy Toms = first female official in football league, then premier league
How was real tennis rationalised into lawn tennis?
- middle class invented it as they aspired to be like upper class
- suited middle class suburban housing with lawn gardens (LC initially excluded)
- private tennis courts established (gardens deemed unsuitable)
