Define intrinsic motivation

A

it is a type of motivation that comes from within; the satisfaction of successfully completing the task - pride, self-satisfaction

Define extrinsic motivation

A

it is a type of motivation that comes from an outside source - praise from the coach, other players and scouts.

What are the extrinsic motives?

A
  • attract to activity + provide early motivation
  • if used too much, may undermine value of the activity and therefore intrinsic motivation is affected - players compete just for the reward)
  • extrinsic rewards rewards may create pressure for players to achieve; no reward = lost motivation + promote cheating

List ways of how to motivate a player?

A
  • offering early rewards + incentives
  • making training fun
  • pointing out health benefits
  • allow success on each broken down part of a skill
  • highlighting role models
  • giving praise; make them feel responsible for success
  • attributing success internally
  • setting achievable targets / goals
  • use inspirational feedback to correct errors
