Define attitude
ideas charged with emotion to create specific behaviour in specific situations
What is the Triadic Model?
a model theory that suggests that attitude is made up of 3 aspects: cognitive, affective and behavioural
Explain the 3 aspects of the Triadic model
- Cognitive is an individual’s values and beliefs
- Affective is an individual’s feelings and emotional responses
- Behavioural is an individual’s actions / intended behaviour
How is attitude formed?
- through socialisation
- repeating and reinforcing the actions of our significant others forms attitude
- conditioned by successful and reinforced behaviour
- can be positive if good behaviour is reinforced but negative if bad behaviour is reinforced (e.g. cheating)
Define cognitive dissonance
challenging of existing beliefs to cause disharmony and motivate a change in attitudes
Define persuasive communication
providing quality new information at the correct time, by the correct person, in the correct way, to encourage a change in attitude
What must the person do to have effective persuasive communication?
- pay attention
- accept
- understand
- retain

What must the coach be to deliver effective persuasive communication?
- expert
- trustworthy
What must the person be to deliver effective persuasive communication?
- clear
- balanced of pros and cons
- unambiguous
How can a negative attitude be changed into a positive attitude?
- persuasion from a ‘perceived expert’
- making training fun
- allowing early success
- using positive reinforcement + rewards
- pointing out the benefits of exercise
- using role models
- using cognitive dissonance
