• competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase enzyme - need for the conversion of HMG- CoA to mevalonate (key in cholesterol synthesis in liver)

• flactulance
• gi disturbance
• joint pain
• muscle complaint
• thrombocytopenia
Interactions
• grapefruit juice
• amiradone
• fibrates
• warfarin
• antiretroviral
• erythromycin, clarythromycin, ketocanazole
• ciclospotin
• danozal
Monitoring
Before and after treatment:
• non FULL lipid profile (total cholesterol, non HDL, HDL and TG)
• LFT
• HbAlc OR FGT (if risk or is diabetic)
• thyroid stimulating hormones
If muscle pain - do creatinine kinase test
Contraindications
• pregnancy (discontinue use 3 months before trying to conceive)
• breastfeeding
• active liver disease
