How to diagnose HTN
If clincal BP is between 140/90 - 180/120 offer ABPM or if CI, offer HBPM
If HTN was not diagnosed, how often should BP be checked
Every 5 years
Primary HTN - modifiable risks
• alcohol
• smoking
• stress
• lack of exercise
• cold temps
• overweight
• diabetes
Primary HTN - non modifiable risks
• age
• ethnicity
• family Hx
List drugs which can cause HTN
• steroids
• NSAIDs
• oral contraceptives
List conditions which can cause HYN
• thyroid disease
• parathyroid disease
• Cushing disease
• sleep disorders
• kidney disorders
Stage of HTN
Stage 1- 140/90
Stage 2- 160/100
Stage 3- 180/120 (hypertensive crisis)
What is masked HTN
BP reading is normal in clinic but higher when using HBPM or ABPM
Is urgency HTN or emergency HTN associated with acute end-organ damage
Emergency HTN
Describe process of how to manage urgency HTN
• hospital admission
• oral drugs
Describe process of how to manage emergency HTN
• admit to hospital
• iv - sodium nitroprusside
What is the target clinical BP/ABPM for >80?
Clincal - 150/90
ABPM - 145/85
