^Kideny Failure Flashcards
How long in advance should assessment begin for renal replacement therapy take place? And for those with failing transplant?
1 year
What are the 2 types of dialysis?
hemodyaslysis and hemofiltration
What is hemodailysis?
• removal of small molecules from blood via diffusion
• used in outpatients (clinics)
What is hemofiltration?
• removal of large (also small) molecules from the blood via convection
• Used in intensive care
Which dialysis involves an artificial kidney?
Hemodialysis
What are the 2 sources of people used as doners
Deceased or living
Transplant adds on an additional of how many years of life?
15
What are the 2 main issues with transplants
• graft issues
• supply
What are the 3 main classes of drugs used in renal transplant?
• anti-rejections (steroids, immunoglobins)
• anti-infective
• anti-virals
Others:
• PPI
• insulin
• antifungals
• pain management
Induction therapy is short term of anti-rejections and uses high levels of corticosteroids, what is this therapy use for?
Prevents acute rejection
Which two drugs are used in induction therapy? Depletion and non depleting
Depleting agent
• decrease in immune cells
• example: r-ATG
• toxic with long term use
Non-depleting agent
• does not decrease immune cells
• example: basiliximab
• well tolerated
