Staplers Flashcards
What are staplers?
A very elegant weapon for a more civilized age.
What is a GIA stapler?
Gastrointestinal anastomosis
What is an ILA stapler?
Intraluminal anastomosis
What is a TA stapler?
Thoracoabdominal
What is an LDS stapler?
Ligating-dividing stapler
What is an EEA stapler?
End to end anastomosis
What does the number in the stapler name mean?
The length of the staple line in millimeters
What 4 types of stapler have a cutting section?
GIA
ILA
LDS
EEA
What 2 staplers can you use for a bowel resection and anastomosis?
GIA
ILA
When performing an intestinal anastomosis with a stapler, what do you do to ensure there is no dehisence?
Place a “good night stitch” by sutuing the beginning and end of the incision.
Describe the steps given in lecture for performing a bowel resection and side-to-side anastomosis.
GIA to resect the offending bowel, then create two stab incisions to insert the ILA stapler. Perform your “good night stitch” and then close the stab incisions with a TA stapler.
What type of stapler can you use for some organ resection surgeries?
TA stapler
What 2 staplers can you use to perform an end-to-end anastomosis?
TA
EEA
How do you perform an end-to-end anastomosis with a TA stapler?
Staple 3 lines and remove excess tissue.
What 2 staplers would you use together to perform a functional end-to-end anastamosis?
ILA
TA
