Q

Describe the steps given in lecture for performing a bowel resection and side-to-side anastomosis.

A

GIA to resect the offending bowel, then create two stab incisions to insert the ILA stapler. Perform your “good night stitch” and then close the stab incisions with a TA stapler.

16
Q

How do you perform a functional end-to-end anastomosis using an ILA and TA stapler?

A

Clamp section of bowel to be removed and make stab incisions in the part of bowel that will be kept. Insert and apply ILA stapler. Use TA stapler to divide between good and bad bowel, and cut away the bad bowel with a scalpel.

17
Q

What 2 staplers could you use to perform a jejunocecostomy?

A

GIA

ILA

18
Q

What kind of stapler would you use to perform a colon resection in a horse?

A

TA

NOTE: You can get some large animal staplers, but they can be tricky to find.

19
Q

How do you perform an end-to-end anastomosis using an EEA stapler?

A

Create purse string suture on one end of bowel, and insert EEA stapler through a pilot hole on the other section of bowel. Put the ends together and pull the trigger, then remove the EEA stapler and use a TA stapler to close the pilot hole.
