Stages of Spelling Development Flashcards
Stage 2: Letter Name-Alphabet Spelling
Age 5 to 8.
This is period of time which children are taught to read, typically during kindergarten, 1st grade, and to mid-2nd grade.
Apply alphabetic principle to consonants.
Spell the first sound and then the last sound of single-syllable words. Middle element (vowels) usually omitted.
Stage 1: Emergent Spelling
In this stage:
Age ranges 0 to 5
Can range from random marks to legitimate letters that relate to sound
Children are not reading conventionally
Not been exposed to formal reading.
Most toddlers, to some 1st graders are emergent spellers, most kinder and some first grade students at beginning of school year.
Stage 3: Within Word Pattern Spelling
Students can read and spell many words correctly.
Stage begins when students transition to independent reading toward the end of 1st grade & expands thru 2nd and 3rd grades, even into 4th.
They move away from linear, sound by sound approach of the letter name alphabet spellers.
Stage 4: Syllables and Affixes Spelling
Achieved in upper and middle grades
Students consider spelling patterns where syllables meet meaning and units such as affixes.
Students are between 9 and 14 years old.
Stage 5: Derivational Relations Spelling
Most Derivational spellers are found in middle, high school and college.
