Name and describe the 1st stage of spelling.

A

Emergent: this may also be known as the pre-communicative stage. A child is aware that letters represent sounds, but is unclear about actual correspondence. The child may know only a few letters of the alphabet, and tends to favor capital letters over lower-case letters.

Describe and state the third stage of spelling.

A

Within Word Pattern Spelling: this is the phonetic stage. Children begin to systematically represent speech sounds with letters or groups of letters in a logical way. Ex. A child may write kom instead of come, or dun instead of done.

A

Syllables and Affixes: this is the transitional stage. The speller moves from a dependence on sound and phonology to the use of visual memory and an understanding of word structure. May write egul instead of eagle, highed instead of hide.

A

Derivational Relations spelling: this is the correct stage. This speller knows the correct spellings of many words by memory, and has learned the basic rules of orthography (correct spelling), including those involving silent consonants, affixes, and irregular spellings. He can usually identify incorrectly spelled words.
