Human Development/Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Develoment Flashcards
Preconventional Level of Morality (age 4-10)
Children obey because adults tell them to obey. They judge morality strictly based on the basis of consequences. (Punished for bad behavior and rewarded for good behavior.)
Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development
Preconventional Level of Morality (age 4-10) - Children obey because adults tell them to obey; strictly based on the consequences.
Conventional Level of Morality (age 10-13) - susceptible to peer pressure
Conventional Level of Morality (age 10-13)
Children in middle childhood or early adolescence are mostly concerned about the opinions of their peers.
The children want to please and help others while developing their eon internal idea of what it means to be a good person.
Post-conventional Level of Morality (age 13-adult)
Morality is judged in terms of abstract principles; ethical choices rise above laws and rules which govern society.
Individuals must look within themselves for the answers rather than external sources of authority. Many people never enter into this level of moral development.
Educational Implications of Moral Development
- *Teachers must recognize that children internalize what is right and wrong based on values and sense of self.
- *There is a sequential foundation upon which higher moral principles are based.
- *Teachers must recognize that children respond differently to moral dilemmas based upon age, education, and socio-economic influences.
