ST.6 transport Systems of Animals N5 (MO) Flashcards
What does blood contain?
Blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma and transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients
Describe red blood cells
Red blood cells have no nucleus, biconcave shape, and containing haemoglobin
What does the specialisation of red blood cells do?
The specialisation of red blood cells aids them to transport oxygen in the form of oxyhaemoglobin
Describe white blood cells
White blood cells are part of the immune system and are involved in destroying pathogens
What are phagocytes and lymphocytes?
Phagocytes and lymphocytes are white blood cells. Phagocytes carry out phagocytosis and some lymphocytes produce antibodies to destroy pathogens
List the heart anatomy
Left ventricle, right ventricle, left atrium, right atrium, aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, valves and coronary arteries
Describe arteries
Arteries have thick, muscular walls, a narrow central channel and carry blood under high pressure away from the heart
Describe veins
Veins have thinner walls, a wider channel and carry blood under low pressure back towards the heart. Veins contain valves to prevent backflow of blood
Describe capillaries
Capillaries are thin walled and have a large surface area, forming networks at tissues and organs to allow efficient exchange of materials
