ST.5 Transport Systems of Plants N5 (MO) Flashcards
What are the plant organs?
Plant organs are roots, stems and leaves
What is in a leaf?
Leaf structure diagram show the upper epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, vein (consisting of xylem and phloem), lower epidermis, guard cells and stomata
What part of the plant transports water?
The part of the plant involved in water transport is the xylem vessel
How do water and minerals get into the plant?
Water and minerals enter the plant through the root hairs and are transported in these dead xylem vessels
How do xylem vessels handle pressure changes?
Xylem vessels are lignified to withstand the pressure changes as water moves through the plant
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the process of moving water through the plant and its evaporation through the stomata
How can the rate of transpiration be affected?
The rate of transpiration is affected by wind speed, humidity, temperature and surface area
What happens to sugar in the phloem?
Sugar is transported up and down the plant in living phloem
What do phloem cells have?
Phloem cells have sieve plates and associated companion cells
