ST1. Ecosystems N5 (LOE) Flashcards
What is a species?
A species is a group of organisms which can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity refers to the range of species within an ecosystem
What is a population?
A population is a group of organisms of the same species
What is a producer?
A producer is green plant which produces its own food using photosynthesis
What is a consumer?
A consumer is an organism which consumes the producer for food
What is a herbivore?
A herbivore is an organism which only consumes plant matter
What is a carnivore?

A predator is an animal which hunts other animals (prey) for food
What is prey?
Prey is an organism which is hunted and killed by a predator
What is a food chain?
A food chain is a diagram which shows a simple feeding relationship between organisms
Describe an ecosystem
An ecosystem consists of all the organisms (the community) living in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which the organisms interact
What is a niche?
A niche is the role that an organism plays within a community
When does competition occur?
Competition occurs when resources organisms require are in short supply
What is interspecific competition?
Interspecific competition occurs amongst individuals of different species for one or a few of the resources they require
What is intraspecific competition?
Intraspecific competition occurs amongst individuals of the same species and is for all resources required
What type of competition is more intense?
Intraspecific
