ST.1 Producing New Cells N5 (MO) Flashcards
What does the nucleus of a cell contain?
All the genetic information for an organism
What is the genetic information in the nucleus called and organised into?
DNA, it is organised into chromosomes
What is mitosis and what controls it?
The nucleus controls mitosis, mitosis is the process of DNA copying itself
What is the process of mitosis
- Chromosomes replicating to become thicker visible pairs of chromatids
- The chromosomes then line up along the equator and their chromatids are pulled apart by spindle fibres to opposite poles
- Two new nuclei form
- After mitosis the cell cytoplasm becomes pinched off and two genetically identical daughter cells are formed
What does mitosis provide?
Provides new cells for growth and repair of damaged cells and maintains the diploid chromosome complement
What do stem cells in animals do?
Stem cells in animals are unspecialised cells which can divide for repair of damaged cells
What do stem cell have the potential for?
The potential to become different types of cells
What do specialisation of cells in multicellular organisms lead to?
It leads to the formation of a variety of cells, tissues and organs
What do groups of organs do?
Work together and form systems
