ST.3 Reproduction N5 (MO) Flashcards
What are body cells?
Body cells are diploid multicellular organisms and are haploid in gametes
What does diploid mean?
Diploid means that each cell contains two sets of matching chromosomes
What does haploid mean?
Haploid means that each cell contains one set of chromosomes
What are gametes?
Gametes are sex cells and can be either male or female
In plants, what organs produce gametes?
The organs that produce gametes in plants are anthers and ovaries. Anthers produce pollen grains containing the male gamete. Ovaries contain ovules which contain the female gamete
In animals, what organs produce gametes?
The organs that produce gametes in animals are testes and ovaries. Testes produce the male gamete, sperm. Ovaries produce the female gamete, ova (egg)
Describe female and male gametes
Sperm are very small and motile. Ova are large because they contain a food store and can not move by themselves
What is fertilisation?
Fertilisation is the fusion of the nuclei of the two haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote, which divides to form an embryo
