-has risen recently; different from the 60s and 70s when college campuses welcomed speakers
-because of the atmosphere, many refuse to speak at colleges
What issue is presented by the heckler’s veto?
-People have the right to hear
-colleges have rules to maintain order, so the heckler’s veto is not allowed on college campuses
-Ex: can’t block the speaker’s entrance
What is the main political affiliation of those who participate in the heckler’s veto
Mainly from the left since campuses are left-leaning
Why do campuses create speech codes?
They believe certain words are harmful and speech can be violent
-those who call words violent have not experiences physical violence so arguably a privileged belief
What is the tragedy of the modern university?
You’re not presented will all sides, so not being educated to the best of their ability
-because campus lean to the left, you only hear caricatures of different positions (should be hearing them from people who believe them)
Repression comes from social conformity
-campuses are very conformist places
-leads to less diversity of opinion
-less supportive of free exchange of ideas the more years spent on campus
-not conforming can get you int trouble – can lead to fear of speaking mind
-need heard arguments and diversity of ideas
Why is it important that ideas are challenged?
-can lead to acceptance and growth
-intellectual growth doesn’t;t occur near your comfort zone
What are effects of censorship?
-turns them into free speech martyrs
-forces them to seek out destructive means
-drives people underground so you can no longer keep track of them
-forces people to lie so they don’t get in trouble
-important to know what public opinion is
-boomerang effect
