Specialised Cells Flashcards
What is the function of an epithelial cell
Closely packed cells which cover the surface of the body and protect the tissues underneath it
What cells is the stomach made of
Muscle tissue Loose connective tissue Nervous tissue Columnar epithilium Blood cells
What is the function of a muscle cell
Contracts and relaxes allowing movement within organisms
What is the functions of glandular tissue
Scretes substances such as milk into the milk ducts and saliva into the salivary glands
What is the function of the xylem
Transports water in plants
What is the function of the phloem
Transports sugars in plants
What is the function of the epidermal tissue
Tissue found on the surface of the cell which helps to protect it and prevents it from drying out
What is the function of a palisade cell
Made of cell with a high concentration of chloroplasts and the site of photosynthesis within the leaf
Where is the xylem and phloem in the stem
Away from the center and on the inside of the epidermis to support the weight of the plant
Where is the xylem and phloem in the root
In the center of the root to resist pulling forces
Describe the palisade cell
Many chloroplasts to absorb light energy for photosynthesis to produce food
Also called a palisade mesophyll cell
Describe the root hair cell
Has a large surface area to absorb the maximum water and minerals
Decribe the xylem vessel
One way system
Water and minerals are transported through the vessels
No end wall between cells
Thick wall stiffened with lignin
Describe the phloem vessel
Water and food is being transported
Cell have end walls with perforations
Two way flow system
How are ciliated epithelial cells specialised
They line the breathing passages and with mucus producing cells
They trap microbes and then waft them up and out of the lungs
