Human Digestive System function of parts Flashcards
Salivary glands

Teeth
Start breaking down the food into smaller pieces as soon as it enters the mouth
Tongue
Helps to roll the food into a soft mass called a bolus and pucsh it down the back of the throat
Oesophagus
Tube which carries the food from the mouth to the stomach, it is about 25 cm long
Stomach
The food mixes with gastric juices containing acid and more enzymes. The food becomes a mushy fluid as it spends 3-4 hours being churned around.
Duodenum
Different enzymes are added which continue the breakdown of the food
Ilium
Contains villi and here the digested food passes across the wall into the bloodstream.
Large intestines
Wider than the small intestine, water is reabsorbed from the undigested waste material which then moves to the rectum where it is stored as faeces
