sound Flashcards
Sound creating meaning
Layers of sound communicate, mood, tone and story in many types of media product, including film, TV shows, advertisments, and computer games. The relationship of sound-silence-to the visual images is important, as they work together to create meaning
Music
Heightens emotion or action. Also prevents silence when there is no dialogue.
Sound effects and audio effects
Aid action scenes. Add to sense of realism
Dialogue
Transmits story information. Audience gets meaning directly
Silence
Creates tension. Draws attention to the visual images
The function of sound in media
Stimulates reality.
Creates tension by starting and stopping
Helps us understand what is happening
Directs our attention to a particular part of the action
Adds or creates something off scene that is not really there
Helps create a mood
Cues us to form expectations about what will happen-for example In the movie jaws, the audience can gather when the shark will appear based on the build up of the music
Diabetic sound
Created within the films world. Characters can probably hear it. May be speech, weather, music being played as part of the story. Assists continuity editing. Adds to sense of realism without being distracted. Comes from a character or object that can be seen on screen or whose presence is implied. May continue over several shots to bring the narrative together. Includes ambient sound:background noises that may or may not be in the field of vision, such as the hum or a crowd or birdsong. Includes synchronous sound that occurs at the same time as the action on screen that makes It, for example dialogue matches actors lip movements.
Non dietetic sound
From outside the films world. Characters cannot hear it. May be a musical soundtrack, voiceovers, dramatic sound effects. Assists in creating mood or drama. Unnatural in terms of the real world but often a standard convention to help audience understanding. Source cannot be seen or implied on screen. Added after filming as part of the editing process. ambient sound may be added later to intensify the scene or add sounds that cannot be recorded while filming.
Soundtrack
Music featured in a film
score
Original music composed for a particular production, played during the action to set mood and atmosphere
Theme music
A tune or collection of notes that is associated with the production as a whole
Sound/musical motif
Sound or music played to accompany a specific character or setting, or to shape the narrative, such as the beeping of a heart monitor in a hospital, or a creepy tune played when the villain enters the shot.
Music in film example
The matrix point at which neo is attacked by his arch enemy, layers various sound effects and stirring music over just 24 seconds to build up to a narrative climax and then fade out to silence.
How dialogue creates meaning
Speech conveys messages via words. However, additional meanings are given through the way in which this dialogue is delivered.
Foley sound effects
Background noise on location ma need to mask dialogue so needs to be minimised. For example; footsteps, punches, heartbeats, crowds roaring, electronics beeping.
