Colour, a brief definition
Directors deliberately decide to feature a particular colour palette to raise certain associations and expectations in the audience.
black
Signifies professionalism, and modernity-darkness and mystery.
Blue
Signifies freshness and cleanliness, coldness, sadness, calmness
green
Signifies, nature and fertility, but also poison and sickness
grey
Signifies calmness, wisdom, detachment, and despair
purple
Signifies wealth and royalty, but also decadence and greed
red
Signifies passion and warmth however also danger and injury
Orange
Signifies warmth and energy however also heat and danger
white
Signifies purity and innocence however also sterility and blankness
Yellow and gold
Signifies warmth and nostalgia however also alarm and brashness
Colour effects
Films may be shot in black and white to suggest a period feel such as the artist.
Schindlers list is shot in black and white, apart from when the shot follows the little girl in a red coat being forced from her home.
Multicolour palettes can suggest dreams and fantasy, such as the wizard of oz
