Somatosensory Receptors Flashcards
What are sensory receptors for?
Light touch
Deep pressure
Pain
Itch
Temp
Proprioception
Kinesthesia
Mechanoreceptors
Respond to mechanical deformation due to touch, pressure, stretch, and vibration
Chemoreceptors
Respond to substance released by cells
Thermoreceptors
Respond to temp change
What are nociceptors?
Subsets of mechanoreceptors, chemoreceptors, and Thermoreceptors (causes pain)
What is tonic?
Fire for duration of stimulus (slow adapted)
What is Phasic?
Adapt to constant stimulus and stop firing while stimulus is still present (fast adapting)
What is a receptive field?
Area of skin innervated by a single afferent neuron
What is the difference in receptive fields proximally and distally?
Smaller distally
Larger proximally
What do distal regions of receptive fields have?
Greater density of receptors
What does a combination of smaller fields and greater density equal?
Increased 2 point discrimination
What does a larger diameter of an axon indicate?
Transmits info faster due to lower resistance to current flow and myelination
What are the fastest axons?
Type Ia and Ib (120-130 m/s)
What are the moderate speed axons?
A(beta) and A(delta) (45-90 m/s)
What is the slowest axon?
Type C (2 m/s)
