Pain Flashcards
Acute pain
Does not create long term changes in nervous system and solves on its own
Chronic pain
Non-nociceptive with long term changes in nervous system (disease state)
What is pain?
Associated with actual tissue damage
What is nociception?
Stimulation of a sensory receptor signaling damage or threat of damage
What makes up Thermoreceptors?
A delta fibers and myelinated
What makes up mechanoreceptors?
A delta fibers and myelinated
What is a silent nociceptor?
Normally unresponsive but becomes responsive during inflammation after an injury
What percentage of cell bodies in the DRG are nociceptors?
75%
What CNS structures are apart of the pain matrix?
Cerebral cortices
Amygdala
Thalamus
Brainstem
Spinal cord
What are the anti nociceptive sites?
Dorsal horn
Brain stem
Hormones
Cortex
How does the dorsal horn contribute to anti nociception?
Inhibits the 2nd order nociceptor neuron in the pathway
How does the brainstem contribute to anti nociception?
Periaqueductal gray, locus coeruleus, and medulla inhibit via descending tracts to dorsal horn
How does the hormones contribute to anti nociception?
Hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal medulla inhibit nociceptor transmitters
How does the cortex contribute to anti nociception?
Amygdala impacts perception of pain using distraction and placebo
Hyperalgesia
Enhanced pain response to a normal noxious stimuli (pinch can go from 2/10 to 10/10 on injured area)
